Sustainability leadership

Addressing climate-related challenges and circularity requires innovative ideas, materials, and systems. We need to support the transition to a net-zero food system, keep materials in the circular economy and extract resources while being mindful of their limits and the planetary boundaries. FBCA members develop individual innovation programs to deliver sustainable packaging, improving the environmental performance of Beverage Cartons and reducing their carbon and water footprint.

Our actions:

  • We strive towards using only renewable and /or recycled materials: Substitute fossil-based materials and aluminum, using only renewable and / or recycled materials that maintain food protection while improving the beverage carton performance.

  • Use only materials certified to the highest sustainability standards: the materials used in beverage cartons are sourced following the ISEAL credibility principles which ensure credible practices and support sustainability systems.

  • Use fibers sourced from sustainably managed forests: The industry has a long commitment to source only fibers from sustainably managed forests, ensuring 100% chain-of-custody certification. Sustainably managed forests sequester and store carbon and protect biodiversity.

  • Foster knowledge on collection and recycling systems: FBCA members cooperate along the value chain to improve the performance of recycling systems, such as, assessing and supporting new collection, sorting and recycling technologies and systems for beverage cartons and creating design for recycling guidelines and protocols to assess and improve the packaging recyclability, increasing recycling rates.

  • Enhancing the Environmental Performance of Beverage Carton Systems: FBCA members are dedicated to continuously improving the environmental performance of their packaging. This includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption. To ensure transparency and accountability, FBCA will annually report the members' collective progress in carbon reductions towards achieving net-zero emissions. Additionally, every five years, FBCA will conduct a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate and track the improvements in the beverage carton system’s performance.
