The ​European Commission wants to get rid of wasteful packaging with the aim to become carbon neutral by 2050. In its Circular Economy Action Plan, it committed to improving and increasing the reusability and recyclability of packaging ​materials, as well as reducing packaging waste. In order to reach these goals, the executive body is currently exploring a set of mandatory criteria and requirements.
