The initiative aims to increase the separate collection of liquid packaging cartons while assessing the practical obstacles affecting their collection and sorting. As part of the project, waste analysis found that liquid packaging cartons were still present in mixed municipal waste, highlighting the potential to improve their separate collection. The findings also demonstrated the importance of clear communication to consumers, particularly that milk cartons should be placed in yellow bins alongside other separately collected lightweight packaging. The project has combined public communication with practical educational activities. This included a successful pilot to collect liquid packaging cartons in primary schools in Miskolc, supported by wider communications activities undertaken by MIREHU Ltd. **Bringing the discussion to a wider audience** MIREHU Ltd. also produced a 30-minute interview as part of its**“Waste under our soles”** series. The discussion explored liquid packaging cartons, separate collection, recyclability and the future of the packaging format. The longer format provided an opportunity to explain several important points in greater detail: - Consistent terminology can help make liquid packaging cartons more visible within waste-management data and discussions. - Separate collection is essential, with collection systems available across almost all of Hungary. - Liquid packaging cartons are recyclable, and recycling infrastructure is available within the EU. Producers are committed to meeting the requirements of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.
