Global Recycling Day: Powering Circularity with the FBCA's RECY:CHECK & DfR

March 18, 2026

This Global Recycling Day, FBCA is spotlighting two tools transforming how fibre‑based composite packaging is designed, assessed, and certified: RECY:CHECK and the Liquid Packaging Cartons: Design for Recycling (DfR) Guidelines.

RECY:CHECK already shows success with the certification process up and running

RECY:CHECK gives industry a clear, science‑based way to verify recyclability across collection, sorting, reprocessing, and application, bringing transparency to how food and beverage cartons perform in real recycling systems. It alsos supports alignment with the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), with the potential to be scaled for use in other regions.

RECY:CHECK has reached an exciting new milestone with eight certifications already officially issued under the new recyclability certification programme. This achievement marks a major step forward for the fibre‑based composite packaging value chain and all those committed to advancing circular, future‑proof packaging solutions. With new certifiers joining the RECY:CHECK ecosystem and growing interest worldwide, 2026 will be a pivotal year for scaling circularity.

Alongside RECY:CHECK, the FBCA's updated Liquid Packaging Cartons Design for Recycling Guidelines provide practical, evidence‑based design rules that ensure Liquid Packaging Cartons (LPCs) are compatible with specialized recycling mills, including PolyAl recovery. They offer a common language for designers, brands, recyclers, and policymakers to build packaging that meets tomorrow’s expectations.

Together, these tools strengthen trust, support eco‑modulation, reduce contamination, and drive high‑yield fibre and PolyAl recycling, helping the global shift toward renewable, low‑carbon, circular packaging.

On this Global Recycling Day, FBCA reaffirms its commitment to credible standards, transparent certification, and scalable circular solutions worldwide.
