Fibre-Based Packaging: Towards a sustainable and circular future
June 26, 2025

Fibre-based packaging is one of Europe’s quiet sustainability success stories. As members of Fibre Packaging Europe, the FBCA is proud to support and share the FPE Manifesto that highlights how our industry is helping build a circular, low-carbon economy.
Made from renewable materials and recycled at scale, fibre-based packaging is already leading the way. With an 83.2 percent recycling rate across Europe, it proves that circularity is not just a goal, it is already happening at scale.
Fibre packaging protects food, reduces waste, and cuts carbon emissions. It is strong, lightweight, and made from renewable materials. And when it's done its job, it gets turned into something new in one of the many recycling and specialized recycling mills across Europe.
The manifesto outlines a number of key priorities:
• Design packaging that is easy to recycle
• Keep innovating to improve performance
• Support initiatives to introduce national mandatory separate collection targets
• Invest in recycling systems
• Source materials responsibly
• Work with policymakers to shape smart regulation
• Measure and report progress
By embracing renewable carbon and fostering innovation across the fibre-based packaging value chain, FBCA and its members support the transition to a resilient, bio-based economy. We invite industry partners, policymakers, and sustainability advocates to explore the manifesto and join us in supporting fibre-based packaging as a key part of Europe’s circular economy transition.
